SDX starts producing gas in Morocco
The London-based energy company SDX said it has started gas production in Morocco after receiving government’s approval.
SDX well is located in the Gharb region not far from Kenitra, where there is an industrial zone including automotive plants that need gas for industrial operations.
Morocco considers gas a transition energy to cut its carbon footprint and bolster the competitiveness of the industrial sector.
Besides tapping into its existing gas potential, Morocco plans to bolster imports through the setting up of an LNG terminal in Nador port which will be later linked to the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline.
Until now, the country has been relying on LNG imports through Spanish terminals which have been pumped to Morocco through a reversal of the flow of the Maghreb Europe gas pipeline that once transported Algerian gas before Algerian authorities decided to unilaterally halt exports.
Morocco has an ambitious and diversified renewable energy plan that aims at bringing the share of clean energy to 52% of the total electricity mix by 2030.
The country is also preparing its green hydrogen offer, tapping into availability of renewable energy and proximity to Europe’s energy market.
