Rached Ghannouchi handed one-year jail sentence for promoting terrorism

Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of Tunisia’s largest political movement Ennahdah, has been sentenced to one-year in prison in absentia for promoting terrorism, one of his lawyers said Monday.
Ghannouchi has been in detention since late April and indicted for 19 offenses including terrorism.
Monia Bouali, one of Ghannouchi’s lawyers, told Reuters that his client has been condemned to one-year in prison in a separate case dating back to February 2022.
The union of Tunisian security forces sued the political leader for promoting terrorism during the burial of Farhat Laâbar, Member of Choura Council and former Al Jazeera Tunisia Bureau Chief.
Aside from the jail sentence, Tunis Court of First Instance also ordered Islamist figure to pay TND1, 000 ($327).
