Morocco starts repatriation of its nationals from Sudan, plane with 136 Moroccans on baord lands in Casablanca

After instruction from King Mohammed VI, Morocco has started evacuating its citizens from Sudan as in-fighting worsens in the country.

A first plane carrying 136 Moroccan Nationals stranded in Sudan landed at Casablanca Airport this Wednesday morning, and a second plane is expected to arrive later in the day.

The Royal Air Maroc plane took off at night from Port Sudan airport, after opening a special air bridge to evacuate Moroccan citizens who arrived in Port Sudan in batches.

Morocco’s consular services secured the evacuation of at least 300 nationals to Port Sudan where they will be airlifted to Casablanca, according to Moroccan ambassador to Khartoum.

Many other evacuation operations are underway after the declaration of a 72-hour ceasefire.

Sudan has descended into deadly clashes and chaos as forces loyal to two rival generals fight for power leaving civilians in precarious conditions.

The conflict broke out when Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan attempted to integrate the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan, into the country’s army.

Though the actual number of casualties is still to be determined, at least 500 people have died so far, according to observers on the ground.
