Somalia donates Türkiye $5m to attend to victims of earthquakes
Somalia Sunday announced the allocation of $5 million for Türkiye to support victims of the slew of earthquakes that have hit the country.
Hamza Abdi Berri, Prime Minister of the African country handed the financial aid to Turkish ambassador during a ceremony held at the national theater in capital Mogadiscio, Anadolu news agency reports.
“The people of Somalia express their sympathy after this devastating disaster, and we pray to God that the Turkish people will overcome the devastation of the earthquakes,” Berri said during the ceremony attended by several state officials, including the Speaker of the Parliament Adam Mohamed Nour.
The funds were collected at a national donation campaign. “Somali people from all walks of life participated in this humanitarian campaign to support the Turkish people,” said Interior Minister Ahmed Muallem Faki.
Türkiye has suffered a series of earthquakes. The two latest occurred on Monday last week, and 185 aftershocks struck the southeast of the country killing at least 3,549 people.
It was followed by a 6.4 magnitude quake that struck southeastern Gaziantep province. A third earthquake with a 6.5 magnitude also hit Gaziantep. The earthquake that hit the country last month killed thousands of people.
