Morocco, Israel want closer cooperation

Morocco and Israel signed three cooperation deals covering political consultation, culture and air services as the two countries aspire to expand ties following the resumption of diplomatic ties last December.

The accords were signed by Israeli Foreign minister Yair Lapid and his Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

Lapid is expected to have talks with tourism minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui later in the day. On Thursday, he will inaugurate the headquarters of Israel’s Liaison office in Rabat and attend a prayer in Casablanca.

Speaking to the press, Bourita said the two countries set up teams to cooperate in the fields of innovation, agriculture, energy, environment protection, trade and investments, adding that ten agreements are ready to be signed in future visits.

“The restoration of ties is an expression of the willingness and conviction of His Majesty the King,” said Bourita.

The launch of direct flights between the two countries added to the human dimension between the two countries and was met with great enthusiasm by Moroccan Jews in Israel, he said.

After he highlighted the attachment of Jews of Moroccan descent to the Kingdom, Bourita highlighted the importance of the Hebraic element in the Moroccan identity and constitution.

“The agreements that we will sign will bring our countries innovation and opportunities for the benefit of our children – and their children – for years to come,” Lapid said.
