Morocco foils smuggling attempt of 25.5kg of cocaine at Tanger-Med port

Moroccan security forces Monday foiled the smuggling into the country of 25.5kg of cocaine at Tanger-Med port that was hidden in a truck coming from a European country.

The operation is the result of cooperation between the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) and judicial police, Moroccan security services announced via Twitter.

The truck driver, a 42-year old Moroccan, was coming from Germany, according to local Alyaoum24.

Security services have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the smuggling and to identify all parties involved.

On Sunday, Moroccan police seized 3.5 tons of cannabis resin onboard a truck at the Tit Mellil motorway toll station near the city of Casablanca. The truck was coming from northern Morocco.

Police arrested two individuals, the driver of the truck and a female passenger.

These latest anti-drug smuggling operations come less than two weeks after Casablanca Police foiled an attempt to smuggle out 7,228 tons of cannabis from Morocco to overseas and arrested three people involved.

The drug haul was found in a truck bearing false registration plates. Tailed by the police, the lorry, which was carrying 220 cannabis bales, crossed several cities and was heading to the port of Jorf Lasfar, near the Atlantic coastal city of El Jadida.
