UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has formally acknowledged the end of the United Nations mission in the Moroccan Sahara (MINURSO) and announced the start of its liquidation.
The statement, which makes no reference to a referendum, marks that the mission is now part of history.
Guterres called on the parties to facilitate MINURSO’s orderly departure as soon as possible.
The MINURSO “ceases its operations” following the Security Council’s non-renewal of its mandate.
November 1, marks the beginning of the liquidation period, he said.
Morocco’s royal palace had said that the mission should leave within days after the Security council failed to renew its mandate.
The end of the mission means the withdrawal of the file from the UN and the Security Council.
