Algeria on Thursday announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing a series of unspecified “provocative or hostile” actions by Abu Dhabi and claiming it had exhausted all avenues to preserve bilateral ties.
The Foreign Ministry summoned the UAE ambassador, gave him 48 hours to leave, and offered no concrete evidence, documents, or detailed incidents to substantiate its claims.
The official statement remained deliberately vague, repeating general accusations of “regrettable and unjustified behavior” without presenting facts that could be independently verified.
This lack of transparency has drawn sharp scrutiny, with observers noting that Algiers has long relied on broad allegations rather than hard proof in its regional disputes.
Later the same day, veteran Algerian diplomat Amar Belani sought to fill the evidentiary void by listing a familiar set of grievances and conspiracy theories text book inherent to the Algerian regime under the civilian-military duo led by Tebboune/Chengriha.
He attributed the rupture to alleged UAE support for the Kabyle autonomy movement MAK, the so-called “Morocco-Israel axis,” Emirati involvement in the Sahel, and economic arrangements he described as disadvantageous to Algeria.
These claims form a classic conspiracy textbook narrative: a powerful external actor, in league with Morocco and Israel, supposedly orchestrating destabilization across multiple fronts!
Far from exposing a coherent plot, the litany underscores how far Algeria has fallen behind the UAE’s pragmatic diplomacy, economic dynamism, and expanding influence in Africa and the Arab world.
President Tebboune himself has repeatedly bad-mouthed the UAE in public appearances, referring to it as a “micro-state” or “statelet,” declaring that “wherever they set foot, blood flows,” and accusing it of interference in Algerian elections and regional affairs, without offering whatsoever evidence.
Such rhetoric has poisoned the atmosphere for years and now culminates in a formal break that lacks the supporting dossier one would expect from a serious diplomatic rupture.
