Switzerland will ban the purchase, import and transit of gold originating from Sudan as part of efforts to curb revenue reportedly financing the country’s WAR.
The Swiss Government said measures would take effect on Thursday, 10 September 2026.
The restrictions also prohibit related services and financial assistance, as well as the sale or supply to Sudan of certain goods and chemicals used in gold mining and extraction. The measures align Switzerland with European Union sanctions adopted on 13 July 2026, which also restrict Sudanese gold imports and the export of mercury and cyanide to the country.
The Swiss Federal Council expressed concern about Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, which has worsened since fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. Gold has reportedly become an important source of revenue for both sides.
The new restrictions will be incorporated into Switzerland’s existing sanctions ordinance on Sudan. The regime, first used to implement UN sanctions in 2005, includes an arms embargo and financial and travel restrictions against 36 individuals, entities and companies.
