Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and defending sovereignty and territorial integrity, as the two countries seek to deepen cooperation on regional and international issues,. DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner made the remarks Saturday in Luanda during a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, held on the sidelines of the 26th Extraordinary Session of the African Union’s Executive Council.
Wagner said the two countries share a commitment to building “a more peaceful, more integrated, fairer, but also more prosperous world,” adding she was delighted the friendship between the two nations rests on shared principles and a firm commitment to territorial integrity, unity, independence and sovereignty. Following the meeting, she expressed her country’s determination to consolidate what she called the “exemplary relations” uniting Morocco and the DRC for decades, welcoming the “highly constructive exchanges” that characterize meetings between officials from both countries.
Bourita, for his part, described Morocco-DRC relations as “strong, solid, and rooted in history,” stressing that Morocco has supported the DRC since its independence. He reiterated Morocco’s “firm and unconditional support” for the DRC’s sovereignty and national unity, as well as for measures Kinshasa has taken to defend its sovereignty against external interventions, adding that “sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries are the foundations of peace and stability in Africa.”
The Moroccan official also pointed to the DRC’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, saying Kinshasa would represent the African continent and advocate for African interests within the UN body. The two ministers also addressed regional and international issues more broadly, reaffirming their shared commitment to peace, integration and development across the continent.
The meeting set the stage for the next session of the Morocco-DRC Joint Commission, which Bourita said would be held in Kinshasa and would constitute an important milestone in further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
