Shipping Maersk company is advancing its logistics network in Morocco with a rail service connecting Tangier and Casablanca, offering an alternative route for cargo moving into the country’s main commercial and industrial hub.
The rail service is already operational, with regular departures between the two locations, offering businesses flexibility and an option to avoid port congestion. Regular rail departures and predictable transit times are designed to improve planning and inventory management.
Maersk said the solution combines Tangier’s global maritime connectivity with Casablanca’s position as a major centre for Moroccan trade. By bringing Tangier and Casablanca together and integrating them, supply chain managers can benefit from enhanced reliability, flexibility, and efficiency.
Casablanca remains one of Africa’s busiest maritime hubs. The port handled 17 million tonnes of cargo during the first half of 2026. In June alone, throughput reached 3.53 million tonnes, representing a 32% year-on-year increase.
Casablanca accounts for approximately 35% of Morocco’s total port traffic. However, growing volumes can also create congestion and limit operational flexibility.
The Tangier-Casablanca rail corridor supports cargo flows between Morocco and Europe. It offers a practical way for businesses to strengthen supply chain performance while navigating the challenges of growing cargo volumes and port congestion.
As trade flows continue to expand, this approach will help to alleviate pressure on congested gateways and also provide the flexibility and operational control needed to support future growth in Morocco and beyond.
