Mauritania and Senegal have launched joint river patrols along the Senegal River to strengthen surveillance and security along their shared border.
The operation, begun last week, involves units from Senegal’s Military Zone No. 2 and their Mauritanian counterparts. According to Senegal’s Armed Forces Public Relations Directorate (DIRPA), the patrols used naval resources from marine infantry units, supported by Police and Gendarmerie personnel from both countries.
The joint teams patrolled several areas on both sides of the river, including Tassem and Sinthane Diama, during the first day of the operation. The military authorities said the patrols are part of regular efforts to strengthen border surveillance, prevent cross-border threats and combat crime.
The increased security presence is also intended to reassure communities living along the Senegal River and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the border region.
