Morocco’s PM says ties with France enter implementation phase after diplomatic reset

Head of the Moroccan government Aziz Akhannouch said relations with France had entered a new implementation phase following the diplomatic reset launched during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Morocco in October 2024, highlighting progress in economic, infrastructure and energy cooperation.

Opening the 15th Franco-Moroccan High-Level Meeting in Rabat, Akhannouch described the gathering as the first governmental translation of the “enhanced exceptional partnership” agreed by King Mohammed VI and Macron.

“The high-level meeting taking place today marks the entry into the practical implementation phase of this shared vision,” Akhannouch said, adding that both governments were committed to turning political commitments into tangible results.

The meeting, the first of its kind in seven years, comes after a period of rapprochement between Paris and Rabat that culminated in Macron’s visit to Morocco in October 2024.

Akhannouch said France’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara had helped strengthen trust between the two countries and opened new avenues for cooperation.

“We highly appreciate France’s position in support of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara,” he said.

On the economic front, Akhannouch said momentum generated since Macron’s visit had accelerated the implementation of major projects in industry, infrastructure, renewable energy, logistics, innovation and investment.

He said energy transition, industrial decarbonization, next-generation infrastructure, rail and port connectivity, and the development of new value chains had become central pillars of bilateral cooperation.

Akhannouch also highlighted emerging cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, the data economy and innovation, describing them as strategic sectors that could boost the competitiveness of both economies and help train future talent.
