World Cup 2026: Morocco’s Atlas Lions Stun the Netherlands in Thrilling Penalty Shootout, Reach the Round of 16

Morocco secured a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a thrilling penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time. The Round of 32 clash was played at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.

The opening 15 minutes of the first half were dominated by tactical play, with most of the action confined to midfield.

After the quarter-hour mark, Morocco came close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions. First, Naïl El Aynaoui’s header was brilliantly saved by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Moments later, captain Achraf Hakimi tested Verbruggen with a powerful strike, but the Dutch shot-stopper was once again equal to the task.

In the closing moments of the first half, the Atlas Lions created two clear scoring opportunities through Azzedine Ounahi and Ismael Saibari. However, a lack of composure and precision prevented Morocco from finding the back of the net.

Morocco began the second half on the front foot, piling pressure on the Dutch defense. The Netherlands dropped deeper and relied on counterattacks, a strategy that paid off in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo scored to give the Dutch the lead.

Following the setback, the Atlas Lions refused to give up and intensified their attacks in search of an equalizer.
Their relentless efforts and persistence was rewarded in the first minute of stoppage time (90+1), when defender Issa Diop headed home the equalizer, sending the match into extra time after a 1-1 draw.

The additional 30 minutes produced little in the way of clear chances, with both sides engaged in a tactical battle. The contest was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, where Morocco prevailed 3-2 to book their place in the Round of 16.

The Atlas Lions, which continue to make an entire nation dream with their win in the high-intensity encounter in Monterrey, will face Canada in the Round of 16 after the North Americans eliminated South Africa from the competition.
