Morocco accelerates construction of world’s largest football stadium, agencies report

Construction of Morocco’s Grand Stade Hassan II near Casablanca is accelerating, with builders working around the clock to deliver what is set to become the largest football stadium in the world, according to reports by Reuters, EFE and Spanish media.

Field reports from Reuters showed that the 115,000‑seat venue, central to Morocco’s bid to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, is already about 30% complete just nine months after construction began, with nearly 40% of the tribunes finished.

Officials overseeing the project said construction is being carried out “around the clock in three shifts” in order to meet an ambitious completion target set for the end of 2027.

The massive complex, expected to cost roughly $1 billion, is rising on a 150‑hectare site between farmland and forest outside Casablanca.

The project is destined to become the largest football stadium globally once completed, reflecting Morocco’s efforts to position itself as a leading venue contender for the 2030 tournament final.

Spanish media, drawing on EFE-style reporting and site visits, echoed the sense of scale and momentum. Outlets described the structure as “pharaonic” and highlighted that its rapid progress is reshaping expectations in Spain, where iconic venues such as Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu had long been seen as front‑runners to host the final.

According to Spanish coverage, the Moroccan stadium’s purpose-built design and massive capacity could give it a decisive edge over renovated European venues when FIFA selects the host stadium.

African and international media outlets also focused on the speed of construction, noting that progress levels of around 30% in less than a year demonstrate the scale of mobilization behind the project.

Beyond its sheer capacity, the stadium is designed to reflect Moroccan heritage, featuring a vast tent‑inspired roof structure that allows natural light to filter into the arena. Authorities are also planning major transport upgrades, including highways and a rail link connecting the site to Casablanca and the capital Rabat, making the venue a centerpiece of wider infrastructure expansion.
