Switzerland joins momentum backing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty for Sahara

Switzerland has added its voice to the growing international momentum supporting Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara, as a lasting solution, aligning itself with positions taken by a widening circle of European states since the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution

This position was expressed in a joint communication adopted by Ignazio Cassis, Federal Councilor, Vice‑President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, together with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, during the latter’s working visit to Bern.

In the agreed document, Switzerland welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that a “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute one of the most realistic solutions” to the regional dispute.

The language places Bern among a growing number of capitals that have come to view the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the most practical framework for a lasting political settlement.

The Swiss stance follows a broader diplomatic trend that accelerated after the Security Council’s November 2025 resolution, which emphasized realism, compromise and pragmatism in efforts to resolve the Sahara issue within Morocco’s sovereignty.

Since then, the European Union and several of its member states, alongside countries in Africa, the Americas and the Middle East, have publicly endorsed or reiterated support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible basis for peace.

At the same time, Switzerland reaffirmed its support for the central role of the United Nations, underscoring its backing for the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary‑General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate a mutually acceptable political solution. The joint communication stressed that international engagement should continue within the UN framework.
