Libya Rescues 404 Migrants from Mediterranean Crossing Peril

Libya’s Red Crescent Society has rescued 404 migrants off the eastern coast near Tobruk after they were found in distress aboard 10 boats in the Mediterranean Sea. The operation, conducted in partnership with the UN refugee Agency, saw emergency teams provide immediate medical and humanitarian support upon disembarkation.

The incident underscores a recent surge in dangerous sea crossings from Libya towards southern Europe, with shipwrecks and rescue missions becoming more frequent. Libya remains a key transit hub for migrants, a trend linked to instability following the 2011 uprising.

According to the International Organization for Migration on Thursday, April 23, 4,407 migrants have been intercepted and returned to Libya in 2026, while 772 others have been reported dead or missing along the central Mediterranean route, one of the world’s most perilous migration corridors.
