Ouahbi poised to take over from Regragui at the helm of Atlas Lions

Morocco’s football federation (FRMF) is preparing to end weeks of uncertainty over the national team’s coaching job, with local media reporting that Mohamed Ouahbi is expected to be named the new head coach of the Atlas Lions.

The appointment, which has not yet been officially confirmed, is widely anticipated to be announced these days of Ramadan.

Local media has reported that Regragui requested to be dismissed after Morocco’s failure to win the African Cup of Nations, in a tense final marred by deplorable actions by Senegalese team and fans.

According to Moroccan outlet Hesport, the FRMF is set to present Ouahbi along with his technical staff during the evening briefing, marking the formal close of Regragui’s tenure.

Regragui guided Morocco to a historic fourth‑place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after taking charge in August 2022.

The expected appointment comes less than three weeks before Morocco’s March international training camp, prompting the federation to fast‑track its decision to give the incoming coach time to prepare and select his squad.

Morocco will play Ecuador and Paraguay in friendly matches on 27 and 31 March in Spain and France respectively as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

Ouahbi, who led Morocco’s U20 squad to win the World Cup in Chile, has reportedly begun working on his preliminary squad list, which could include several new faces as well as standout members of Morocco’s under‑20 team.
