Morocco will soon host two international events aimed at strengthening multilateral cooperation and building consensus around fundamental human rights standards, Interministerial Delegate for Human Rights Mohamed Elhabib Belkouch announced in Geneva.
The first will be “a targeted retreat, scheduled before the summer, dedicated to reflecting on avenues for reforming the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) as it approaches its fifth cycle,” Belkouch said while delivering Morocco’s statement during the general debate of the high-level segment of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).
Morocco will also organize a thematic event focused on torture prevention, designed to promote the exchange of best practices among national preventive mechanisms, independent institutions, and international partners, he added.
These two initiatives are part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to help build consensus around the core standards and mechanisms of the Human Rights Council, Belkouch said.
He also underscored that Morocco continues to advance structural reforms aimed at strengthening equality and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, in line with the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
Belkouch reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to multilateralism and to reinforcing the international human rights system.
In this context, he expressed Morocco’s full support for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, particularly the High Commissioner’s personal engagement on several priority issues, including the prevention of violations, capacity-building efforts, and the promotion of human rights–based approaches in public policies.
