Heavy rainfall boosts Morocco’s dam filling rate to 54%

Morocco’s national dam filling rate rose to 54% on Jan. 27 as sustained rainfall pushed total water reserves to 9.049 billion cubic meters, nearly doubling year-on-year, according to official data published Tuesday.

The current stock compares with 4.667 billion m³ a year earlier, when the filling rate stood at 27.7%, marking a 93.8% increase in stored water over 12 months.

At Al Wahda, Morocco’s largest reservoir, storage rose from 2.413 billion m³ to 2.516 billion m³, lifting its filling rate from 68% to 71%.

Idriss I increased from 54% to 56%. Bin El Ouidane climbed to 36%. Al Massira, the country’s second‑largest but still far below comfortable levels, rose from 342 million m³ to 361 million m³, nudging its filling rate to 13%.

Oued El Makhazine was at 100% filling rate, while Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah hit 99%.

\Authorities expect further gains in the coming days as widespread rainfall continues across several regions and new precipitation is forecast, which could accelerate inflows, particularly for dams still far from their maximum capacity.
