Independence Manifesto Day: Morocco’s King grants pardon to 1,386 convicts

King Mohammed VI has pardoned 1,386 convicts on Independence Manifesto Day, commemorated in Morocco this Sunday, January 11, said the Ministry of Justice in a press release.

The list includes 15 inmates who had been convicted in cases of extremism and terrorism. They were pardoned after they formally expressed their commitment to the constants and sacred values of the Nation and its institutions, revisesed their ideological orientations, and renounced extremism and terrorism, the press release said.

The list of the overall beneficiaries of the royal pardon includes inmates who were granted pardon over their remaining jail terms and convicts who had their prison terms reduced.

Some convicts benefited from pardon over their prison sentences or remaining prison terms. Other convicts saw their fines cancelled, while others benefited from both a pardon over their prison terms and fines.

The King usually grants free pardon to inmates and convicts on religious and national holidays.
