Egypt accelerates domestic energy drive with two new Western Desert wells

Egypt has announced on Thursday, January 1, the successful drilling of two new oil and gas production wells in the Western Desert as part of a broader strategy to scale up domestic energy output.

The Dorra-36 and West Yasmine-3 wells, completed by Agiba Petroleum Company, have shown strong early performance, with combined expected production of around 1,650 barrels of crude oil per day and approximately 19 million cubic feet of natural gas daily.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said work is underway to swiftly connect the wells to existing infrastructure to bring them into operation. The development aligns with Egypt’s wider upstream expansion plans, including agreements signed in December 2025 with foreign partners to drill 26 exploration wells in the first quarter of 2026. Officials note that natural gas production has been on a gradual upward trajectory, reaching about 4.2 billion cubic feet per day, reinforcing the country’s push for energy security and sustained output growth.
