Egypt Urges Swift Move to Second Phase of Gaza Peace Deal in Call with US Secretary of State

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, on December 9, called for an immediate transition to the second phase of the Gaza peace agreement signed in Sharm El-Sheikh in last October.
In a phone discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he emphasized the urgency of forming a Palestinian technocratic committee to administer the Strip and highlighted the need to implement the planned full Israeli withdrawal and permanent ceasefire once the initial six-week period concludes.
During the call, Abdelatty advocated for the deployment of an international stabilization force in Gaza under UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and underscored the critical importance of guaranteeing uninterrupted humanitarian access. He also stressed the need to rebuild Gaza’s devastated infrastructure, warning of the deepening humanitarian crisis. The ministers further discussed regional issues, including the Sudan conflict, where Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Sudan’s unity and the push for a ceasefire, as well as developments in Lebanon following his recent visit to Beirut.
Abdelatty also addressed Egypt’s water security concerns, reaffirming Cairo’s opposition to unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile Basin and emphasizing adherence to international law. The conversation extended to the Ukrainian crisis, bilateral cooperation, and opportunities to strengthen economic and investment ties, with both sides affirming their commitment to deepening the long-standing Egypt–US strategic partnership.
