Burkina Faso and Niger have welcomed the adoption by the historic UN Security Council of Resolution 2797, which enshrines, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the Morocco-proposed autonomy plan as a serious, credible, and lasting basis for achieving a solution to the Sahara issue.
This welcome was expressed by the two countries’ Foreign Ministers, Karamoko Jean Marie Traore and Bakary Yaou Sangaré, following separate talks they held in Rabat with their Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
The talks were held on the sidelines of the Conference on African Victims of Terrorism, convened in Rabat December 2-3.
They two officials reaffirmed their respective countries’ support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco, which they described as the only credible and realistic solution to the Sahara dispute.
UN Security Council Resolution 2797 marks a diplomatic milestone as it enshrines the legitimacy and relevance of the autonomy plan as the ultimate solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. Several states from Africa and beyond have welcomed the resolution as a historic move setting an irreversible course for international consensus in favor of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
