Sudan’s Army Chief rejects peace plans without RSF disbandment

Sudanese Army Chief Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has dismissed, on December 1st, any peace initiative that does not mandate the dismantling of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), insisting that “the elimination of the militia” remains the sole viable path to ending the conflict.
Speaking in Port Sudan on Monday, Al-Burhan vowed retribution against what he labelled “criminals and killers,” citing the extensive bloodshed and humanitarian suffering in Darfur, El Fasher, and other affected regions as leaving little room for compromise.
The war between the army and the RSF, which erupted on April 15, 2023, has led to thousands of deaths and forced millions to flee their homes. Despite multiple mediation attempts — including a recent joint proposal from the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt for a three-month humanitarian truce followed by a nine-month political process — efforts to achieve a durable ceasefire have yet to yield results.
