The Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylia (MAK) is planning to announce the independence of Kabylia on December 14, 2025. This date coincides with the anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Resolution 1514).
Kabylia has historically constituted autonomous political entities before the Ottoman and then French conquests. In a bid to botch up and disrupt the Kabyle declaration of independence, the Algerian regime has initiated contacts with MAK leader Ferhat Mehenni offering him safe return to Algeria to run for president during the upcoming presidential election.
The political sweeteners and the discreet contacts with the exiled MAK leader were disclosed by Paris-based “Sahel Intelligence” news platform citing both Algerian intelligence and Kabyle sources.
The goal of the Algerian rulers is to bring back Ferhat Mehenni into political life in Algeria and prevent the breakaway of Kabylia, but MAK leaders remain very suspicious and do not trust the deceitful Algerian Generals who are tightening their grip on power amid rapidly changing regional geopolitical landscape.
However, the humiliating diplomatic setbacks suffered by the Algerian regime in the Sahara issue combined with it spat with France and Sahel countries and the growing U.S pressure exert on it to normalize relations with neighboring Morocco have shaken hard its foundations and stalling strategy.
According to some analysts, Algerian junta is trying to prevent Kabylia region from gaining independence with some political openness but the offers come too late to save the country from collapsing or breaking into pieces because of decades-long military dictatorship.
