Morocco assists Spain in dismantling hashish trafficking network

The Spanish Civil Guard announced on Wednesday that a criminal network specialized in hashish trafficking with the help of drones has been dismantled, thanks to collaboration with the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie.

This operation, carried out within the framework of security cooperation between the Civil Guard and the Royal Gendarmerie, successfully neutralized the cross-border drug trafficking network, which was operating with sophisticated technological means, the Civil Guard said in a statement.

The dismantled network managed to smuggle up to 200 kilograms of hashish into Spain in a single night, using custom-designed and assembled drones, the statement added.

The operation, launched after several unidentified flights had been detected, resulted in the seizure of eight operational drones used for narcotrafficking and ten others still unassembled, and the apprehension of nine individuals.

The drones took off from the town of Alcalá de los Gazules and returned to Spanish airspace to drop the drugs in mid-flight over the areas of Vejer de la Frontera or Tarifa, the Civil guard stated.

Investigations revealed that on nights with light winds, up to ten drones could fly simultaneously, enabling the network to smuggle large quantities of drugs into Spain.
