Morocco’s Industrial Equipment Imports Surge 132% in Decade-Long Expansion
Morocco’s industrial equipment imports have experienced remarkable growth over the past ten years, reflecting the country’s accelerating transformation into a high-tech manufacturing hub. Imports of finished industrial equipment products jumped from 77.03 billion dirhams in 2014 to 178.88 billion dirhams in 2024, representing a 132% increase.
The upward trajectory continued through 2024, with industrial equipment imports reaching 178.88 billion dirhams compared to 158.31 billion dirhams in 2023, marking a 13% annual increase. This growth reflects intensified purchases of materials destined primarily for automotive, energy, and construction sectors, linked to the resumption of major infrastructure projects.
The momentum has carried into 2025, with the first nine months recording 142.17 billion dirhams in industrial equipment imports versus 124.84 billion dirhams during the same 2024 period—a 13.9% progression. This trend indicates sustained demand for industrial equipment, supported by public and private investment in high-value sectors.
In 2014, imported industrial equipment was dominated by electrical, mechanical, and automotive goods. Electrical circuit connection devices led at 7.4 billion dirhams, followed by industrial vehicles at 6.9 billion dirhams and electrical cables at 6.25 billion dirhams. These three categories alone represented nearly 27% of total category imports.
By 2024, the structure had evolved dramatically toward higher technology. While electrical connection devices remained prominent at 16.57 billion dirhams (9.3% of total), they were closely followed by piston engines and motors at 15.8 billion dirhams (8.8%) and aircraft parts at 14.5 billion dirhams (8.1%). The aerospace sector’s rise in rankings illustrates its growing importance in Morocco’s industrial value chains.
Utility vehicles showed spectacular growth of 36.8% compared to 2023, reaching 11 billion dirhams—approximately 60% higher than 2014 levels. This dynamism reflects logistics growth, freight transport fleet renewal, and manufacturing expansion.
The most significant transformation involves the emergence of higher-technology segments, including telecommunications electrical equipment (up 24.7%) and rubber and plastics processing machinery (up 24.2%). These categories demonstrate modernization of industrial equipment demand and evolving needs toward advanced technologies, positioning Morocco as an industrial player engaged in sophisticated manufacturing rather than simply a machinery purchaser.
