Morocco’s high-speed rail project shows remarkable progress four months after launch

Morocco’s ambitious high-speed rail line connecting Kénitra to Marrakech has achieved significant milestones just four months after King Mohammed VI officially launched construction from Rabat-Agdal station on April 24, 2025, Moroccan news outlet le360 reported. The 430-kilometer project represents a crucial extension of the existing Tangier-Kénitra line, positioning Morocco as a regional leader in modern transportation infrastructure.

The massive undertaking has reached full operational capacity with impressive progress indicators. Approximately 3,500 hectares of land have been cleared across the 430-kilometer route, enabling the launch of initial platforms for track installation. The project encompasses 13 civil engineering contracts, including eight dedicated to earthworks and structural elements, two for viaducts, one for Rabat’s tunnel system, and two for conventional railway sections.

Construction volumes demonstrate the project’s scale: 4 million cubic meters of earthworks completed, 1.5 million tons of ballast produced, 500,000 sleepers manufactured, and 600,000 tons of rails delivered. Production of ballast and sleepers began in January 2024, ensuring steady supply chains throughout the construction phase, the outlet said.

Railway infrastructure development has accelerated significantly, with designated companies for tracks and overhead lines already operational. Signaling and GSM-R telecommunications systems are currently being deployed across multiple sections. The Agdal-Aïn Atiq segment has reached 65% completion, marking substantial progress in critical urban connections.

The project includes comprehensive station modernization and advanced maintenance facility construction. Architectural competitions have selected designers for high-speed rail stations, with Hay Riad station nearing completion as the first operational facility. Technical centers and maintenance hubs are progressing simultaneously, ensuring long-term network performance.

With a projected investment of 67 billion dirhams—53 billion for infrastructure and 14 billion for performance and maintenance—this represents one of Morocco’s most ambitious modern developments. The initiative extends beyond infrastructure, positioning the kingdom as a regional leader in sustainable mobility while connecting major economic and tourism centers, fundamentally transforming national transportation dynamics, the news outlet commented.
