Vienna: Morocco elected chair of 68th Session of UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

Morocco has been elected Chair of the 68th session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) convening in Vienna from June 25 to July 2.

Moroccan Prof. Rafiq Akram, Director of the Royal Space for Remote Space Sensing Centre, was picked to Chair the 68th session of COPUOS with unanimous support of the African Group.

Under the Moroccan chairmanship, members of the UN Committee will discuss ways of maintaining outer space for peaceful purposes, reports on space & sustainable development, water, climate change.

The agenda also features debates on the use of space technology in the UN system, space exploration & innovation, “Space2030” Agenda as well as a report of the Committee to the General Assembly.

The UN Committee is tasked with fostering international cooperation for peaceful uses of outer space, studying space-related activities, encouraging space research programs, and addressing legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space.

During the session, Morocco’s Permanent Mission in Vienna will organize, in partnership with UN Office for Outer Space Affairs a side event under the theme: “Celebrating African Space Development: Towards a Sustainable & Inclusive Global Space Sector”.
