Mauritania’s former president gets 15 years in jail on corruption charges

An appeals court in Mauritania handed a 15-year jail sentence to former President Mohamed ould Abdel Aziz on charges including corruption and illicit enrichment.

The sentence was increased from 5 years in jail in a first instance verdict against the President who ruled the country from 2009 to 2019.

The court found that he had used his position to amass considerable personal wealth illegally during his decade-long rule.
