Libya’s medical advancements led to recovery for over 4,000 cancer patients

Libya’s efforts in the fight against cancer have seen significant progress, with over 4,000 patients reported to have fully recovered thanks to the country’s dedicated medical professionals.

Haidar Al-Sayah, Head of the National Anti-Cancer Authority, highlighted this achievement during the Libyan International Conference on Oncology and Radiotherapy. He revealed that over 4,000 scans were conducted in the past year alone, demonstrating the commitment to early detection and effective treatment of cancer in the country.

A significant development in this success story is the imminent arrival of new cancer medications in Libya. Al-Sayah confirmed that the first shipment of high-quality oncology drugs, sourced from reputable global manufacturers, will soon reach Libyan shores. This marks a pivotal moment for the National Anti-Cancer Authority and is considered one of the authority’s major achievements in its mission to provide dignified and effective cancer treatment domestically. This step is seen as a major boost to Libya’s healthcare system and a source of hope for many cancer patients.

The country has also made strides in improving its cancer patient registry, with the “Moharib” (Fighter) database now recording over 24,000 cancer cases in Libya. Al-Sayah noted that nearly 17,000 of these patients had previously been overlooked and unregistered, underscoring the need for improved awareness and comprehensive healthcare strategies. This initiative will not only enhance treatment efforts but also ensure that more Libyans have access to the cancer care they need.
