Morocco prepares for potential locust invasion
Morocco has taken precautionary measures to counter a potential locust attack after swarms have been noticed in the country’s south, emanating from the Sahel region.
While the situation remains stable, authorities are monitoring the evolution of the swarms in the affected regions, while a response including pesticides have been prepared to counter a potential outbreak, Moroccan media reported.
Few days ago, the FAO Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region (CLCPRO), warned of an outbreak in Libya, Tunisia and Algeria.
Following abundant rainfall in August and September 2024, green vegetation grew in the northern Sahel and southern Sahara, allowing locust infestations beyond the summer season and well into winter.
Desert locusts can consume vast amounts of crops and vegetation. A small swarm can eat the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people.
