Tunisia faces imminent locust invasion

Tunisia braces for a locust invasion coming from Libya, as the country experiences a rainy season auguring well for the farming season.

The agriculture ministry confirmed that desert locusts have been found south in the region of Tataouine, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions.

Desert locusts can consume vast amounts of crops and vegetation. A small swarm can eat the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people.

This leads to significant losses in staple crops, affecting food supplies.

While the situation is still under control, the ministry prepares for the worst-case scenario that could affect grain yields this year in the cash-strapped country.

Technical teams are carrying out surveillance operations while intensifying cooperation with neighboring countries and international organizations to curb the spread and protect vegetation.
