Morocco’s labor unions reject strike law
A strike law that the government managed to pass in the Parliament’s two chambers has been rejected by the main labor union, who called for a nation-wide strike and protests.
In addition to the law, the unions decry the impact of inflation, low wages and what they describe as deteriorating conditions of the working class.
Marches are expected to be staged in different Moroccan cities in protest of government policies.
They blame the government for passing the strike law without prior agreement with the unions’ representatives.
Labor minister Younes Sekkouri said the new law is “balanced” and protects the right to strike as well as the right of workers who do not want to subscribe to a protest.
The planned strike is the first nation-wide in Morocco in about a decade.
