Morocco to set up new gas power plant worth $415 million
Morocco plans a gas power plant near Al Wahda dam with a total capacity of 990 megawatts and for a cost of 415 million dollars.
State-owned water and electricity utility will offer 20% of the funding while the rest will come from securitization and bank loans, Le Matin daily reported, citing an official financial document.
The plant is part of Morocco’s push to increase the share of gas in its electricity mix.
The Moroccan financial market authority AMMC published a document with the project description saying diesel will be used as an emergency fuel to ensure better efficiency.
Besides gas, Morocco has been heavily investing in solar and wind to diversify its energy mix, with the goal of bringing the share of renewable energy to 52 of its total mix by 2030.
