Morocco’s largest stadium to be ready three years ahead of 2030 World Cup – official
Morocco plans to complete a 115,000-seat stadium in Benslimane near Casablanca in 2027, three years ahead of the World Cup it will co-host together with Spain and Portugal, chairman of the World Cup organizing committee Fouzi Lekjaa said on Wednesday.
The stadium is expected to be the largest in the world and would cost up to 5 billion dirhams ($500 mln), the Moroccan government had announced.
Morocco is also planning to complete the upgrade and expansion works in the stadiums of Rabat and Tangier in two months, he told members of the Moroccan employers’ federation (CGEM).
After the African Cup of Nations that will take place in Morocco in December this year, upgrade works will target the main stadiums in the other World Cup host cities of Agadir Marrakech and Fez, as well as 23 training sites across the country, he said
At least, 40,000 volunteers need to be trained to ensure a better organization of the World Cup, he said.
Morocco was also extending its high-speed train network south to Marrakech ahead of the World Cup and expanding the airports of Casablanca, Rabat and Fez.
“Casablanca airport is planned to be a hub serving Africa,” Lekjaa said, as Moroccan airlines increase its fleet from 56 to 200 by 2035.
