Tangier, Morocco’s second largest city after Casablanca
The 2024 census showed that Tangier has become Morocco’s second largest city, out populated by Casablanca and followed by Fez.
Casablanca retained its standing as the most populous city with 3.23 million, followed by Tangier (1.27 mln), Fez (1.18 mln), Marrakech (1.15 mln), Sale (945k), Meknes (526k) and the capital Rabat (516k), according to a census that put Morocco’s population at 36.8 million people.
Casablanca region is still topping the ranking with 7.6 million people, followed by Rabat-Sale-Kenitra (5.1 mln), Marrakech-Safi (4.8 mln), Fez-Meknes (4.4 mln), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (4.3 mln). The five regions are home to 71% of the Moroccan population.
Demographic growth dropped to 0.85% on average between 2014 and 2024, from 1.25 between 2004 and 2014.
The number of Moroccan households grew 26.82% to 9.27 million and the number of foreign residents in the country grew 71.8% to 148,152.
The urban population grew to 23.1 million, while rural Moroccans increased to 13.7 million.
