Libyan civil society organizations seek to hold Conference in Geneva to revive political process

A Swiss newspaper has reported on September 3 that representatives from Libyan civil society, as well as economic, political, and academic sectors, are intensifying their appeals to the United Nations to organize a Conference in Geneva to revitalize the political process in Libya.

La Tribune de Genève highlighted that the ongoing tensions related to the Central Bank of Libya crisis underscore the gravity of the situation. Human rights activist and international advisor to the Conflict Resolution Committee, Aisha Al-Abbar, has called on the UN to urgently appoint a new special envoy to Libya to expedite the political process and pave the way for elections.

In a statement to the Swiss newspaper, Al-Abbar said, “We may need to mobilize a broad-based popular movement across Libya to dismantle existing institutions and establish a military council, with the Supreme Judicial Council guiding the country towards fair elections.”

She added, “We fully support the work of the 5+5 Committee and hope for its swift activation to secure the country and unify the military institution to protect Libya, its institutions, and its borders.”

Al-Abbar emphasized that their initiative is a grassroots movement, independent of any internal or external influence. “We remain neutral towards all parties, working tirelessly to unite the Libyan people. These efforts are crucial to preserving the will of the people and preventing the fragmentation of Libyan unity. A key next step could be organizing a conference in Geneva”.
