Angola: ANPG and Sonangol search for oil in onshore blocks
The National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and Sonangol Exploração e Produção are set to enhance their exploration efforts in the Kwanza Basin’s onshore blocks, by employing specialized services to detect oil and other hydrocarbons.
In a press release issued on August 28, the ANPG announced that the project is scheduled to commence in September 2024, aiming to improve the geophysical and geological understanding of the targeted blocks.
The initial phase of the contract involves data collection and processing, which will take 45 days. This data will help identify variations in rock properties and reveal potential geological structures that might harbor oil and hydrocarbons, in alignment with the ANPG’s Exploration Strategy.
The contract includes acquiring gravimetric data (studying and analyzing rock residues) and magnetometric data (measuring magnetization levels) in the Kwanza Basin’s onshore blocks, which span the provinces of Luanda, Malanje, and Kwanza-Norte, specifically Blocks KON-11, KON-12, and KON-15.
The project will be conducted by the Striped-Horse and Metatek consortium, utilizing Airborne and FTG technology to produce high-resolution geophysical maps. The data collection will be performed using a specialized aircraft to minimize environmental impact. The consortium is expected to deliver the final results in the first quarter of 2025.
