Sierra Leone, which has a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council, said the autonomy plan is the only “credible, serious and realistic” solution to end the dispute over the Sahara.
This came in a joint statement following talks in Rabat between Sierra Leonean and Moroccan foreign ministers, Timothy Musa Kabba and Nasser Bourita.
Sierra Leone is among the 27 nations that opened a consulate in the Sahara, giving their recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty there a tangible aspect.
Sierra Leone also took part in January 2021 to a ministerial conference, convened by the US and Morocco, backing Morocco’s autonomy plan and the Kingdom’s full sovereignty over the southern provinces.
In the statement, the foreign minister of Sierra Leone also said his country backs the UN process to reach a realistic, feasible, and lasting solution to this conflict.
