Could Chad be the next Sahel state to end military cooperation with the US?

Chad has sent a letter threatening to end security cooperation with the US, a move already taken by neighboring Niger last month amid growing ties between Sahel military-ruled countries and Russia, CNN reported.

Sahel countries- Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger together with Chad- have already ended France’s military presence in the region, marking an anti-Western stand.

The Chad letter was sent to US defense attaché last week threatening to suspend the Status of Forces Agreement SOFA, which governs US army operations in the country.

The letter suggests that all US forces would have to leave the N’Djamena base, the CNN reported citing four unnamed sources.

The letter came from the office of the Chief of Air Staff of Chad, Idriss Amine, the sources said.

Most US troops in Chad are in the N’Djamena base and their number is estimated at 100.

The Chad move would further complicate the US counter-terrorism strategy in the Sahel after Niger, where some 1000 US soldiers are stationed, revoked a similar military cooperation deal.
