Clash between herders and farmers kill 21 in Nigeria

At least 21 villagers were killed in armed clashes between Fulani herders and farmers in Kogi, central Nigeria.

The violence highlights the growing tension between pastoralists and farmers in competition over grazing and resources.

The new showdown took place after Fulani herders sought reprisal for the killing of six of their members by villagers, Edibo Ameh Mark, chairman of Omala local government area of Kogi, said.

Witnesses told Reuters some 100 herders were involved in the attack which involved sporadic shooting that lasted for 45 minutes.

Climate change is pushing herders further south due to lack of graze in the dry north, auguring ill for more tension between pastoralists and nomadic people.
