Famine looms over Sudan as conflict drags on

The Sudanese population is slipping to famine as infighting hits the country’s farm production capacity as well as imports.

Nearly a year since fighting broke out between forces loyal to army chief Al Burhan and head of the Rapid Support Force (RSF), children are being reported to have died out of hunger while sick people face tough choice of buying scarce medicine or expensive food, international media reported.

The infighting worsened inflation in the country, that was once described as the African food basket with steady flow of Nile water and available lands for farming.

The war has disrupted supply chains and forced Sudanese people to stand in long queues for little food.

The UN estimates that nearly 26 million Sudanese- half the population- need urgent humanitarian aid, with no end in sight to the civil war.

Top UN officials have said the conflict has plunged the country into “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history” and could trigger the world’s largest hunger crisis.
