UNGA: Morocco’s Ambassador to Co-facilitate 2025 World Social Summit

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, has designated Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, to co-facilitate the UN negotiation process relating to the modalities and the Political Declaration of the World Social Summit dubbed “Second World Summit for Social Development” which will take place in 2025.

Hilale will conduct this processus alongside the Ambassador of Belgium to the United Nations.

The choice made for the Kingdom is a tribute to the royal care and commitment to achieve social justice and social development and to preserve the dignity of Moroccan citizens.

This is also a recognition of the royal vision anchored in the values of humanity and solidarity. Indeed, Morocco has implemented a real social revolution which came to fruition through the Royal Project for the generalization of social protection launched by King Mohammed VI on April 14, 2021, as well as the various projects initiated by the Sovereign to fight poverty and exclusion and democratize access to basic social services, including health, education, housing, and justice.

The UN responsibility entrusted to Ambassador Hilale reflects again the credibility, trust, and respect that Morocco enjoys at the United Nations, as an active actor committed to sustainable development and social justice.

This responsibility also comes after the co-facilitation entrusted to Morocco’s ambassador of the very first UN process of negotiation of the Political Declaration on “prevention, preparation and response to pandemics” adopted by Heads of State and Government during the high-level meeting of the General Assembly which took place in New York last September.

This designation thus consolidates the Kingdom’s new development model based on the human rights approach as well as the recent social measures adopted in Morocco.

Omar Hilale’s designation comes after the adoption of the UNGA resolution, on February 27, 2024, which decided to convene the “Second World Summit for Social Development” in 2025, to fill gaps and to reaffirm the commitment of the international community to the principles set out in the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and to provide impetus for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This important process will be marked by transparent and inclusive consultations with all UN Member States, social partners, and civil society. Morocco and Belgium will develop and facilitate the important Political Declaration to be adopted by Heads of State and Government during the high-level week of the General Assembly in 2025.

The 2025 Social Summit will take place 30 years after the historic first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, during which Heads of State and Government defined an ambitious shared vision for social development aimed at social justice, solidarity, harmony, and equality within and between countries.
