Moroccan King’s role, efforts to defend Palestinians’ legitimate rights commended by NAM summit
The Non-Aligned Movement Summit convened in Kampala, Angola, Januray 19-20, commended King Mohammed VI for his political initiatives and humanitarian and social actions to safeguard the interests and legitimate claims of the Palestinian population.
In the final declaration adopted Saturday, the Heads of State and Government taking part in the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement highly praised the central role of the Al-Quds Committee, part of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, chaired by King Mohammed VI, in defending the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish a sovereign, independent and viable state with East Al-Quds as its capital, in accordance with the relevant international decisions and the Arab peace plan for the creation of two independent, internationally-recognized states.
The Non-Aligned Movement also praised the role played by Bayt Mal Al Quds Al Sharif Agency, as the Committee’s executive arm, in preserving the Holy City’s legal status and identity, as well as protecting its places of worship.
The Final Declaration also highlighted the pioneering role played by Morocco at the level of the United Nations that led to the adoption of several groundbreaking initiatives.
In this vein, the Final Declaration referred to the Resolution against the Burning of the Holy Quran and Hate Speech, presented by Morocco on July 25, 2023 and adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly 193 member states.
The adoption of this resolution enshrined Morocco’s role, in line with the high directives and enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI, as a regional and global leader in promoting the values of peace, tolerance and inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, as well as in combating the danger of hate speech conveyed by violent extremism, obscurantism, populism and racism of all kinds.
The Kampala Summit also praised Morocco’s role in peacekeeping and peacebuilding at UN level, notably through its presidency of the Central African Republic Configuration, and through its status as coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement Working Group on UN peacekeeping operations.
The Heads of State and Government likewise commended Morocco’s significant contribution to the regional and international fight against terrorism.
At another level, the NAM summit backed and encouraged Moroccan national and regional initiatives on human development and sustainable development, as well as on the fight against corruption, migration and climate change.
In addition, the Kampala Declaration praised Morocco’s key role in facilitating the UN process to support pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR).
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita represented King Mohammed VI at the NAM and led the Moroccan delegation that also included the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale.
