Morocco diversifies wheat suppliers in 2023

Morocco has diversified its wheat suppliers in 2023 to avert dependence on a single source and avoid the impact of geopolitical tensions on supplies.

In 2023, Morocco imported 4.758 tons of soft wheat, compared with 5.27 tons in 2022, when the war broke out in Ukraine, sending prices skyrocketing, according to Morocco’s cereals agency ONICLE.

France was Morocco’s main supplier with 2.3 million tons, followed by Germany with 1.16 million tons, Romania (357k tons), Poland (284k tons) and Russia with 217k tons.

Morocco has also increased imports from Baltic states and reduced purchases from Argentina, Brazil, and Ukraine.

This year, Morocco is expected to import more amid drought prospects that would impact farming output.

Wheat is the main staple in Morocco which subsidizes bread prices.
