Sahara: UK Reaffirms Support to UN Efforts Seeking Just, Enduring & Mutually Acceptable Political Solution

UK Foreign Office has renewed its supportive stand to the “UN-led efforts to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” to the Sahara regional conflict.

Responding to a written question on the Sahara issue at the House of Commons, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State David Rutley said : “We support the work of Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General”.

The United Kingdom also welcomes Morocco’s engagement with the UN Sahara Envoy during his recent tour to the region to advance to the UN-led political process. “We will continue to encourage constructive engagement with the political process”, he stressed.

During his meeting held on May 9 with Moroccan Foreign minister Nasser Bourita, UK’s minister for the Middle East & North Africa, Lord Tariq Ahmad, discussed the importance of moving the UN-led process forward towards resolution of the Sahara issue, said Mr. Rutley.

Lord Tariq and Bourita had reaffirmed the two countries common vision for the establishment of a strategic partnership and deepening further longstanding friendship between the two Kingdoms.
