Court in Niger orders immediate release of son of deposed leader

The High Court of Niamey has ordered the immediate release of Salem Mohamed, son of Mohamed Bazoum, the Nigerien President deposed on July 26 by a junta now controlling the country.
The Court in a late last week ruling indicated that Salem is a victim of “assault”, “manifestly unlawful disturbance”.
A junta known as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) led by the commander of the Guard Abdourahmane Tchiani ousted Bazoum and placed him and his family under house arrest.
Bazoum’s defense team filed in early September 2023 a lawsuit against the junta before the regional Court (Cour de la CEDEAO) and the UN Human Rights Council for his “unlawful detention.”
The lawsuit was reportedly taken to the Niamey Court early this month.
