Benin eyes 300 MW in solar energy output by 2030
Benin is planning to generate 300 Megawatt in terms of solar energy by 2030, as the western African country strives to mitigate the energy deficit.
Samou Séidou Adambi, the country’s minister of Energy made the announcement Saturday October 7 on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of ministers of Energy of the regional organization, ECOWAS.
S. Adambi indicated that the country is ramping up energy projects across the country including thermal power plants, photovoltaic solar power plants and hydroelectric power plants.
Benin established a national plan to develop renewable energy power, mainly solar photovoltaic power, in order to overcome these challenges. It is aiming to install a total of 150 MW of solar power generation facilities by 2026.
Two plants namely the 127-megawatt Maria-Gléta thermal power plant and the 25-megawatt Illoulofin solar power plant have been commissioned.
Benin, minister Adambi also noted, is determined to play its part in the regional integration of the electricity sector, while placing particular emphasis on its energy autonomy.
